Actually Malak fired on Revan's flagship and knocked him out, the Jedi took him back to Dantooine and erased his memory.

@blackromeoKOK yes they may have been equals in title, but everyone knew that revan was the superior, so malak sort of took the role of apprentice automatically. all a matter of perspective.
