HERE's a part of the answer i sent to riotyourownmother (not sure of the name, i'll check it ^^)
for how to do that sounds
i'm posting it until i can post the video where i explain it all :)
when you have a wah pedal, you plug in from in to out, as usual and it's an enveloppe filter which you an control with your foot, the usual wah
now if you plug your guitar in the out of the wah and the amp in the in
your wah becomes an oscillator (like in vintage synth) note that you have to put the wha in fully opened position to get some sound and you might aswell want to turn all your guitar tones and volumes up to 10 to be sure there's sound coming
you cannot control the frequency of the oscillator (the pitch) right on with the wah, you will only get one sound at a certain pitch, then you can change it a little by turning your tone knobs, but the bigger bend you can get is like a 4th (on my guitar it is) so i use external effects to change the pitch such as my whammy, my line 6 echo park Delay (i do hat a lot in concert, mess with the oscilltor and the delay) or even another wah , octaver
it's totally like a synth (i love synth, tha's how i got the idea to do that with my guitar) you have a basic oscillator + effects filters etc...so you can add basically anything you want right after, be sure that the wah pedal is the first pedal right after your guitar or it might not work
now for the cut effect, this comes right from the position of the tone knobs, on a certain position you get a little cut effect (it think it's a comb filter where you can grow or narrow the frequency, anyway i'm not sure about it and my english's not good enough to try to explain it all :D) anyway, you get a cut effect and you can change de rate by turning reeeeeaaal slightly the knobs, i meannn REALLLLY that's why it looks like i'm not doing anything with my fingers in the video, it's just that you can't be able to see that from camera angle
things to be sure of :
- tone knobs volume and wha fully open
- wha is right after the guitar
- your wah has a true bypass, if it doesn't it might not work at all
dunlop's JH1 is great for that (that's the one i own) all these oldschool pedals wrok great for that, it doesn't work with all those crazy new wah with all those modelisation stuff on it (at least it didn't wokr with the ones i tried)
also i added a little electronic resistance to my guitar to get a cleaner sound and less buzz, it might play a little role in the cut effect, but i can't be sure because the only other guitar i tried this effect with was a gibson guitar and the tone and stuff are so diffrent from fenders squiers and stuff that i didn't get the cut stuff, only the oscillator sound, well it's still cool anyway
ATTENTION BRAINLESS KIDS I DID NOT ATTEMPT TO PLAY TOM'S SOLO, IT JUST A VIDEO TO SHOW SOME FRIEND A WEIRD SOUND I USE AND I THOUGHT THIS WAS THE MOST APPROPRIATE SONG
SO STOP COMMENTING BOUT HOW IT'S NOT THE SAME AS IN THE SONG
some wierd sound i use for tom morello's "scratching" solo
people always get O_O when you do it live ^^
i love it ^^
It's cool and all, but why did you put a massive ass explination in the video info for what could have been summed up as 'Reverse the wires on your wah wah.'
I found this out when I plugged it in the wrong way too.
