Cannery Row was formerly a nickname for Ocean View Avenue. It became official in January 1958 in honor of John Steinbeck and his well-known novel Cannery Row.
It is the site of a number of sardine canning factories--
the last being closed in 1973.
Now, we can see restaurants, hotels,
local artists' galleries and wine tasting rooms.
We can see the lab of Ed Ricketts,
the model to "Doc" in Steinbeck's novel.
Ricketts more less lived in his lab,
with specimens for schools and
marathon sessions of philosophizing --
where's Lee Chong's shop at? Does his family still run it?
