Dwight had his grand daddy in mind when he wrote this song. But part of the beauty of it is that it speaks OF and TO every person who has ever earn their daily bread by the honest sweat of their brow, every person, man or woman, who has contributed in a positive way to the forging of this great nation of ours; from the coal miner, to the steel worker, to the cross country trucker, to the factory worker, to the farmer, and the field worker...
They will give all, even their lives, to see to it t
Thanks for posting one of the best numbers Dwight has written and performed. The marvelous vocal harmonies and fiddling of Scott Joss only adds to the enjoyment of this great performance...
God bless you. i go down everyday at 3pm i run a miner. i work in harlan county, ky. i love this songs god bless you all. ive become a miner, its in my blood my father grandfather and his father all was coal miners. everyday i go down i love it more and more. glad to support the us with electricity.
As for your Obama crack: keep in mind that any miner who would vote for a union-busting Republican is a company man, a scab, and a traitor to the memories of the miners of Matewan and Harlan County.
Donna: God-bless your husband for doing what he has to do, but the point of the song is that mining has historically been something that's been forced on us mountain folk - exploitation of mountain folk, pure and simple. Mine owners get rich on the backs of men who are forced to risk their lives to put food on the table. How many mine-owners do you think spend the last years of their short lives coughing-up #9 coal? I've watched many a freind or relative go out that way, and it aint pretty.
BRAVO...BRAVO - no one can sing a country song like Dwight ! Takes me right home each time i hear his old songs. AMEN ! Bless you sir.

Could not have said it better. There are bigger issues than most can understand.
