Tibetan Monk Sets Himself on Fire and Dies, Sparking Protests

A Tibetan monk who set himself on fire to protest the Chinese comunist party occupation of former Tibetan territory, died on Thursday.
The incident took place on the third anniversary of Tibetan protests in March 2008, that were violently put down by the military.
The 21-year-old monk named Phuntsog was from the Kirti Monastery in Aba County of Sichuan Province.
Washington-based rights group International Campaign for Tibet says police extinguished the flames, but then beat the monk before his death. They also said monks then took him back to the monastery for medical treatment.
In contrast, Chinese state-run media Xinhua says that police extinguished the flames, then took the monk to a nearby hospital, and then other monks forcibly took him to the monastery and hid him.
Following the incident protests broke out, as hundreds of monks and lay people gathered around Kirti Monastery. Protests also extended to Dharamsala, India, after exiled Tibetans heard the news.
Radio Free Asia says Chinese regime troops have since surrounded the monastery and have blocked the roads leading into Aba.
