@jabba12000 The 700r4 is actually a really desired auto tranny (and it's newer version the 4l60e) and are great transmissions can withstand alot (and can be built greatly). And isn't a slushbox... HOWEVER the 200r4 which was the auto tranny for the 82-84 camaros/firebirds and monte carlos... Now those were slushboxes
-
@jabba12000 I have an 88 Iroc Z w/ the 5.7L. The 700r4 only had one flaw, it was the that it doesn't shift into 4th at wide open throttle. A simple Shift kit could fix this. The main problem the 3rd gens had were the Tuned port injection systems. They were low end torque monsters yes (reason i love mine) but after 4.5k rpm they lost power, which then made the auto slower b/c u had to wait til it shifted, manual u could shift right after the powerband. Reason I'm upgrading to holley stealth ram.

I understanf that there are certain trannys and some newer ones are faser than their manual versions. However the old clunker auto in those camaros are definatly slower tha the manual. That was my point. I don't care what a racing tranny can do. I was refering to how the auto slush box in your camaro makes it slow as shit.
-
@jabba12000 Say you had 2 cars the exact same... just one was automatic the other was manual. the manual would have ~15-20more rear wheel horsepower. However the automatic shifting perfectly at the correct times outweighs the slower shifts of the manual. And with manual having the change of missing a gear.... Auto is the better answer. 80% of drag racers use an automatic transmission. The remaining 20% is between the regular manuals and the 2spd powerglide which is popular among racers but cost
-
@jabba12000 Manual cheaper to repair.. yes. Auto Less efficient? No, Since its already computerized for the best desired shift-points for all around driving. When u rework the shift-points for racing you have it shift right as the power-band ends so it starts back up in next gear on the power-band. The HP loss difference is small the Automatic being .20 loss from flywheel to rear wheels, and manual being at .16 loss only .04 difference between the 2. The horsepower lost does not effect the end
-
no shit they shift faster. But they have are less efficient and cause you to lose hp. A manual car will always have more hp to the wheels and will always be cheaper to repair.
-
@jabba12000 are you a dumbass? Automatics are always faster than Manual transmissions. Your reflexes to shift are no wheres near efficient or as fast as a computer. If you think Automatics shift to early for your liking then u change the shift points. simple as that. Granted Manual's are a ton funner to drive.. they are never faster in transitions.
