Democratic Senators Daniel Akaka, Jon Tester and Mark Begich held a press conference today calling on Republican Senator Tom Coburn to release his hold on a veterans' health bill. On the eve of Veteran's Day, Senator Akaka said, "Let us allow our deeds to speak for us." He continued, referencing Tom Coburn, "the senator who has been blocking parts of this bill since the summer argues that this bill is too expensive. I believe that when we vote to send troops to war, we have an obligation to take care of them."

In an unusual move, Senator Coburn arrived a few minutes prior to the start of the Democrats' press conference. Coburn seated himself in the front row among the press corps as his action to obstruct the bill was highlighted by Democrats.

  • Standing up for veterans is what the Democratic Party does every day. I dont know why republicans cant show their support, not just say they do.

  • You sure summed it up right! I hope that, everywhere, across this county, on Wednesday, that there is a Republican--or any other hypocrite-- singing the praises of veterans, that there is also someone who actually does respect & care about our veterans, to call their bluff & put them on the spot.

  • BS. Not one Vet prior to 0/11 would get help under this bill.. This twisting of facts is shameful.. No RVN Vet is covered, no WWII, no Korean War is and no Gulf War vet was. This was all about 2,000 out of about 30,000 Vets drawing Aid and Attendance benefits. Can we be honest.

  • Coburn claims he doesn't pass anything without knowing where the money comes from. Guess he made a special exception for the 2005 and 2006 war supplementals that helped fund the source of these veterans' problems?

    Exactly, well said!

  • Oh, trust me we do.
