http://www.paulcolligan.com Paul Colligan demonstrates how you can do simple screencasting (create a screencast) with nothing more than Quicktime 10 (which comes with Snow Leopard) on the Mac. Please leave comments below on how you think this might affect other (paid) Mac screencasting programs such as Screenflow, SnapZ Prox, and Camtasia?

  • great job. worth exploring

  • Screenflow is better quality, but Quicktime is a good free, built in alternative.

  • Thanks a lot for this tutorial! Just one question: is it possible with Quicktime Screencasting to record only a part of your screen?

  • ...like zooming in on a feature, highlighting the cursor or a window, deleting bits in the middle, adding multiple video & sound tracks, including mouse clicks or not, a red circle to show when you've clicked, including what the iSight camera sees, adding text, 3D rotation of clips, opacity, brightness-saturation-contrast, ducking - I don't really need to make screen-casts specially often, but I just have to buy ScreenFlow because it's such an empowering experience to feel it under your fingers!

  • Many thanks for putting this up, I hadn't discovered this feature before, and your demo got me trying it out! If what you need is to record and trim and upload, it's great that Apple has given us this feature so you don't have to shell out $100 for a pro-level tool. But honestly I can't imagine how anyone who has even just tried the demo of ScreenFlow could ever think anything else was enough! With a hundred different finesses - well, it's like the difference between a Model T and a Ferrari ...

  • isnt it called Quicktime 8

  • That is Briliant Paul!

I use only QuickTime for my screen capture, but did not see the upload to YouTube feature. Thx!

  • its a video capture ability to show others what exactly one is doing on one's computer. for how to vids and etc.

  • Hi guys - I'm wondering what the heck a screen capture video is? There's so much to learn here. If anyone cares to tell me in plain language, I'd appreciate that. I am using You Tube to promote the best income generating plan in Network Marketing - but still have to get some of the technical stuff learnt!! Thanks. Cathy

  • Hey Paul,

I always wanted to try this to show others how to do "screen capture video"...

    Thanks
