John Carpenter's first big studio film came with a big studio composer in the legendary Ennio Morricone.

As a great fan of the original, I found the prequel pretty decent, well above the sci-fi shit we have today.

Best version = Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell, Jr. The novel that inspired all of "The Thing" movies. If you're a fan of these movies you should read it. Its actually very interesting.

Possibly the best horror flick of the 80s. I was born in 78 and it took me until 1992 to view this masterpiece. Tremendous acting, literate script, simple yet effective Ennio music, and the FX I'll give a passing grade. Insert huge "really" look here. The practical FX still shock 31 years after the fact. Rob Bottin is a demented genius. Love it!!!

The prequel was okay, but it had the stuff we saw in the original film. The ending was good though.

yeah the best thing about the prequel is how they tied it to the original but i still think the 1982 version is better

I don't think either one is better because they both tell different stories. The 2011 version takes place in the camp where the dog came from that infects the people of the 1982 film. If you pay close attention to the part where the scientists go visit another camp on the 1982 version you will see a man sitting in a chair with frozen blood dripping down his hands and then if you watch the 2011 version you will see the exact same thing at the end. Pretty cool huh?

you can tell which version is better when you know all the names by memory but not the ones in the 2011 version

This is the only film to ever scare me as a child.

it would have been cool to see genuine Norwegians as the protagonists for the film but you know that Hollywood wouldn't like that. It seems that films were willing to be more experimental only two decades ago. Seems silly that modern horror films are constricted to down to such a path of linearity in contrast to the creative freedom they expressed before. A decent horror film should be unpredictable in my opinion.
