A nice guitar and amp just would show how much any OTHER delay would crash and burn your original tone.
A delay wont sound good unless you are using a nice amp and guitar.
Would you prefer he use a 70$ guitar through a crate practice amp?

You're playing a Duesy into a boutique ac30 amp. It's not the delay that's keeping your tone from getting "muddy." haha
