Black Board: Ginny Bocek, Parks Program Specialist, gbocek@waukeshacounty.gov
Ginny: Hi I'm Ginny Bocek with the Waukesha County Park System we're here at Retzer Nature Center to learn all about my job. Come on in.
Black board: The Interview
Interviewer: Describe a day for a Parks Program Specialist in a Waukesha County Park System?
Ginny: No Day is ever the same. I walk in and I have my to-do list, and then a newspaper reporter calls and then I have to do leg work for that. Or a customer calls and there's some customer relations that I deal with as well, um, but mostly I am doing a lot of the um, background marketing PR for the parks system. Currently we have a apple or I'm sorry a earth week activities we have coming up at the end of April, so I'm dealing with advertisers as well as, um, newspapers to try and put the story in their calendar of events as well as an article.
Black Board: What type of facilities does the Waukesha County Park System operate?
Ginny: Well the Waukesha parks, Waukesha County Parks System is a natural resource based park system, so we give people a location to recreate, a city park and Rec creates the programs to recreate as the park system we create the facility or the area. We have eight parks, three golf courses, two ice arenas, and the Retzer Nature Center here, and the Waukesha County Expo. So, um, we are responsible for the maintenance of these facilities as well as preserving the natural landscape of the areas, um we do have rentals, we have swimming in the summer , camp grounds, um so we have um, many things for people to do.
Interviewer: What are some of the social media that Waukesha County Park System uses or you specifically?
Ginny: I specifically for the Waukesha County Park System, we have a Facebook page for the golf courses and um we just did a new website for them so there is an e-newsletter component to that which is great for a marketer to be able to track all the new e-members, so I'm putting an ad campaign together, click to our website become a member and it's completely trackable. Things of the past, like the newspaper are not trackable, um Facebook page is well trackable, everything that I do with the golf course now has the Facebook logo Facebook logo on it so that we push them to both the website and the Facebook page and vice versa.
Interviewer: Knowing what you know now what advice would you give a current PR student?
Ginny: That's a toughy. Um, my words of wisdom, um, I would say the best thing is to go into things with an open mind. Things are always changing, um, what I, what I did my first year out I'm still utilizing now but again in different ways. Um, don't be, um, don't, how do I wanna say that, um
Interviewer: Close-minded
Ginny: No, um, take whatever your job is the first job out of college don't be disappointed if it's not exactly what you wanted to do because, whatever you do in that job will help you in the future and where I'm at today I feel very grateful where I was a couple years ago, um, my first couple of jobs out of college weren't exactly what I wanted and I was surprised how it has helped me in my current, in my current job so I, that would be my biggest word of wisdom is to um, just take whatever experience that you get out of, out of college.
Interviewer: Thank you so much.
Ginny: Thank you

  • Again, no day is the same. Love to hear that! It’s great to hear her thoughts on jobs right out of college. I will keep that in mind as I begin to look for jobs when I graduate in the next year.

  • I liked her "words of wisdom". Going into things with an open mind because things are always changing and no matter where you start, the things you learn will transfer over in the future.

    Jessica M.

  • I love her advice about staying open-minded. If theres anything I've learned from being a PR major its that PR is a very broad field. Having a career that changes from one to the next seems like such an exciting thing.

  • I like her advice about having an open mind. She's so right that things are always changing and that we need to remember the things we learn right away after school. I've been learning a lot about developing your skill set from any area, including a job that might not be your dream job. I also liked her insight on using your website to push your Facebook and your Facebook to push your website.

  • I love how she says to stay open-minded and be proud of your first job. Regardless of whether you love your first few jobs or not they will help you evolve as professional and that is all that matters. I feel like you should take every new job as a learning experience and grow from there.

  • Being a PR major is much more in-depth then expected. They control social media sites such as Facebook, new websites, and e-newsletters which "is great for a marketer to be able to track all the new e-members." New ways of conducting business have become extremely important for companies to recognize and use because newspapers are used anymore. Her words of wisdom was to "the best thing is to go into things with an open mind." Great presentation. DM

  • I love hearing that "no day is the same." I love having a to-do list but I like to be doing different things each day as well. Ginny seems very interested in her work and I think that makes this video really successful. "don't be disappointed if it's not exactly what you wanted to do". Hearing about you success in past jobs, I think its really interesting that you have become very happy with what your doing. I'm glad you say that because I don't plan on getting a job a.s.a.p.
