There is no shortage of time machines in the world of science fiction.

You could probably name a bunch of them off the top of your head, from H.G. Wells' iconic creation to such mainstays as Dr. Who's Tardis and Dr. Brown's flux-capacitated DeLorean. But just how many fictional time machines can you explain?

In many works of fantasy and science fiction, the time machine is just a magical plot device. No actual science is thrown at the audience. Most of the time, no one asks for any. After all, you're probably not watching Life on Mars or Terminator Salvation for a lesson in theoretical physics.

Plus, if you're writing time-traveling fiction, then skipping the science spares you the embarrassment of getting something wrong. Isn't it enough that you described 1997 as being a world full of flying cars and busty android life partners?

Let's take a look at five examples of the plausible and ridiculous ways fictional TV and film characters have traveled through time.

  • So that's why the numberplate of his delorean in part one said e=mc2

  • @spudnick160 you think alot my friend.. Nice!

  • We've got to understand the laws and principles behind dark matter and dark energy first before we'll ever travel between space-time; these two unknown universal factors are greater than gravity, light, and blackholes! This is why I believe humans can only really achieve time-traveling only when we've reached a type 3 civilization on the Kardashev scale; after we've harnessed the power of a star.

  • @VexT916 - We must not forget that once upon a time there were people who were murdered because they claimed that the Earth was round.- Galileo & co. We should also remember that only 30 years ago people laughed at us if you suggested that we could ever use a wireless telephone. The last 30 years has developped more knowledge and technical progress as in the 10,000 years before. Suddenly, Where did we get all that knowledge as Nano technology? I'm just saying.... Never say never.. tX Guido

  • @Ziggurathsss We haven't even built a sustainable space-ship that can allow us to live in space and yet so many humans have already assume time-traveling is around the corner... I say keep up the enthusiasm people, but be realistic about it's probability. P.S. the church condemn Gallileo not because he stated the Earth was round (the Vatican was well aware of that at the time), but because of this, "vehement suspicion of heresy" against the church; which is bullshit in my opinion.

  • @VexT916 - Every era feels exalted and that makes us blind.

We think we know everything but we just stepped out of our infancy!

The only difference between the ancients and us is that they had names like fireball, flying wheel etc..for a ufo f.e.

Our discovery is no more than a different name for the same unknow vehicles.

We just left the Middle ages..

    Tx friend

  • @hemoglobinification happy new year bro

  • @xxdreamsxx100 chuck only thinks he travels in time, the power of thought can take you anywhere, anytime BUT does not improve the quality of life. In the many universes i have travels his movies are all B rated - go figure.

  • chuck norris travels in time anytime he wants

  • Wasn't it already proven, you cannot go back in time, but you can go forward in time because of special relativity? Also, our perception of time can be altered at near light speeds. Math proved this. Michio already knows this and explains this in other lectures. On this show, he is trying to counter the laws of bending space time to allow you to go back in ones own perceived time.

  • @InvalidFacee Yeah, he's an idiot.
