  • grandma's youngest son, fighting in the last war, wrote to ask his mum to buy the record. He was 18yrs old. She bought the disc. The last thing she ever did for him. She died before he came home. Bet this song touches many an old soldier.

  • 1954 At sea, Persian gulf, at night on H.M.S. Wren. Ship darkened, so only navigation lights showing, stars cover the sky. Myself and two other seamen are on the focsle (sharp end) watching the porpoises ahead of the ship. Someone is quietly playing records over the armament broadcast, Deanna Durbin sings The Lights Of Home, good thing it was dark.

  • I have had the pleasure of owning a Deanna Durbin CD for 16 years and this is one of my favourite songs on it. She was a phenominal talent of her time, often competing with Judy Garland for the same roles. She got fed up with Hollywood in the early 1940's, at a still young age and she lived the rest of her life in relative obscurity, in Paris.

  • My dad came home on a troop ship from Bahrain in1948... this was played over the ship's tannoy as they approached Southampton one evening. He said there wasn't a dry eye on the ship.....

  • My very favourite song - sung by my favourite singer. So very, very beautiful. Many thanks, violinthief, for letting us all enjoy this unforgettable version of an old tune.

  • My father would sing and whistle this lovely song quietly to us in the back of the car at night when we drove "home" from a day out in Sydney. He is 95 now and still has a beautiful mellow voice.

  • Another song taught by our mother while in graders. We used to sing this song together with my other younger siblings before going to sleep. I miss my mother..thank you so much for posting..

  • Mezmerizing!

  • I can not get this song out of my head!!!!!!
