The 22-year-old was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 12th round (366th overall pick) in the 2004 First-Year Player Draft out of Saint Thomas Aquinas High School in Florida. The right hander went 7-2 and registered a 3.39 earned run average for the Double-A Tennessee Smokies in 2007. He was promoted to Triple-A Iowa of the Pacific Coast League where he went 3-1 with a 2.66 earned run average and notched 37 strikeouts in 40 and 2/3 innings of work.
