An old Douglas-fir is felled downhill. This isn't my video, it's from this user:

I reversed it and cleaned it up a little. I would guess this tree is 8-10 feet through. It was likely passed over by the original loggers of the area as it was growing on the edge of an embankment. You can see the springboards the faller was using on the far side of the stump.

Dead or dying, oh yeah, like the other 95 percent of the forest your grandfathers removed...they were doomed to rot.

That's kind of how early foresters described the forests of the North West -- using terms like, "overgrowth" and "decay" to describe the primeval forests -- as if forests should all be trim, straight and neat like a wheat field ripe for harvest.

  • Douglas firs are huge. They can grow 400 and 480 feet high, 10 -15 feet in diameter under the right conditions.

And if you don't believe the above figures, watch my vids. None today are known to be that size. Probably because over 95 percent of the prime land of old growth in B.C., Washington, and Oregon has been logged.

  • if left alone this tree could have lived from another 500 years, it was probly not even half way through its natural life. douglas firs have been known to live over 1000 years, and reach 17 feet in width. this tree was probably only 8 feet wide. luckily the biggest firs are now protected but many very large trees like this are still cut.

  • Mercy sakes

  • how it it waisted?

All that snag would have done is rotted away...

    ignorant people

  • 400 yr old tree

    wasted ...

  • all of these tree-hugging hippies just need to quit looking at logging and cutting these big trees as a bad thing... i mean yeah it sucks to see these big old growth trees cut down. but hell that could have been dead or dying. if it was dead then whats the point of leaving it standing for it to fall on its own and just rot in the woods instead of it being out to good use
