Changes - Chapter Ten

(Sophies P.O.V.)

I went to the kitchen to read the note Jake had sent me. I took a deep breath and opened the folded piece of paper. It read:

Sorry,
Jake. What the FUCK is that?!?!?!?! If Claire wasnt here Id probably throw plates at walls and smash coffee mugs on the floor. Instead, I went to the den and sat on the couch with Claire. She looked up, ~You forgot my sandwich! ~ I moaned, ~Im sorry Claire. Im just distracted today. ~
~Oh. Whats wrong? ~ I glanced at her; ~Its nothing you need to worry about. Ill go make your sandwich, okay? ~ She grinned, ~Okay.~ I stood up and went towards the kitchen.

Before I knew it I had already given Claire her sandwich and was sitting in the recliner. I guess I was in a trance. I sighed and closed my eyes, leaning back in the chair. I was exhausted; all this emotional stuff can wear a girl out

I woke up to my cell phone ringing. I couldnt remember where I put it so it took me a while to fine it. But it had already gone to voicemail. It was in the kitchen in the cabinet with the peanut butter. I was in a trance, all right
I grabbed my phone and went to back to the den. I noticed Claire was asleep on the couch, curled around her favorite pillow. I smiled to myself and looked to see who had called me: Nathan. I sighed, Youre overprotective, Nate. I didnt want to talk to him but decided I should or else hed get worried. I scrolled down to his name and pressed send. It barely had time to ring before he answered. ~Soph! Why didnt you answer the phone? Are you okay? ~ I rolled my eyes, ~Im fine, Nathan. I just fell asleep and it took me a while to fine my phone. Im sorry. ~
~Ohokay. Im sorry I woke you up. But why do I hear Elmo in the background? ~ And without thinking I told him, ~Claire was watching it before she fell asleep. ~
~Youre watching Claire?!?! After he-he has the NERVE to ask you to watch his little sister?! Why did you-~ I interrupted him, slightly irritated with his reaction, ~I dont have anything against Claire. Its not her fault her brothers a jerk. I enjoy having her here! ~ I took a deep breath.
~Im sorry, I know. Its just I know how much you care about him and I know it hurts. I just I want to protect you and now I feel like I failed. ~ I swallowed the lump in my throat and told him, ~You didnt fail. Its nothing you could prevent. ~ I was crying and I hoped he couldnt tell.
~Thank you. For saying that. I didnt fail-~ he gave a little laugh, ~Even if youre just saying it. ~
~Well Im not just saying it. And sorry to cut the convo short but someones at the door. Ill see you when you get home. ~
~Okay. Love ya, bye. ~
~love you, too, bye. ~
I got up and went to the door and opened it just enough to see who was there. I saw a middle-aged woman looking worried and angry. I opened the door the rest of the way and she said, ~Hello, Im Jacobs mom ~
