Here is the transcript of the review:
Hey guys its SniperWolfHI here to review the new game Avatar based on the new James Cameron film
I am not one to play games based on movies, mostly for the fact that they almost always suck. But I decided to pick this game up because I remember watching the trailer and thinking to myself "this looks more like a video game"
The game, by Obisoft Montreal, was put into production 3 1/2 years ago, when the movie went into pre-production. And they didn't want to make a game totally based on a movie, because, honestly, that is boring. So they decided to make it sort of a prequel to the movie and give you more of an in-depth experience in the world of Pandora.
First thing that needs to be said about this game is the fact that it is beautiful. The graphics and detail that went into creating Pandora is just mind blowing. There is no doubt that they put a lot of time into this game, however I kind of wish they put as much effort into the environment as they did in the actual gameplay itself.
You are able to choose from 2 different species, the evil Human colonizers or the indigenous peaceful Na'vi. Choosing either side will give you a very different experience because the humans use their high tech guns to their advantage, while the Na'vi use swords and a bow an arrow. So you're basically getting 2 different games in one. Each race also gets their own special skills like going invisible, phase walking, calling in airstrikes, and a bunch of others.
The humans race plays more like an over the shoulder shooter, like gears of war. Where as the Na'vi plays more like a Fable meets Mercenaries meets the last fern gully. I'll do some more reviews on the different character classes later.
I was happy with the weapon selection, although honestly some of them I never used. And everything levels up automatically, including your armor, so you basically have no control on skills, weapons, and armor. It is just one of the many things this game spoon feeds you.
The games controls fell really stiff and difficult to handle. So several times I found myself getting frustrated with the game, and it is especially difficult to drive the vehicles through dense jungle when something so much as a tree root can get you permanently stuck. Although the Na'vi is extremely limited in their vehicles, which are pretty much worthless, the Humans get a lot more fun toys to play with, so I simply suggest playing the humans first before trying out the Na'vi campaign, but that is just my opinion.
I also didn't like how linear the game is, you go from mission to mission that they pretty much spoon feed you and besides some of the collection side quests, there is not much more to do. The gameplay can get really repetitive quickly and half the time you're simply just running through the jungle fighting the exact same guys you've been fighting since the first few minutes of the game. There is an extreme lack of variety in enemies and little thinking is required to kill them. Especially end bosses, unless you're the Na'vi, who really don't have end bosses, but overtime you're basically just leaping shooting leaping shooting leaping etc.
I pride myself on my abilities to play Risk, so I was happy to see they incorporated a mini game that plays a lot like it. You earn credits for doing anything in the game, such as killing enemies and accomplishing missions. You spend those credits in a mini game where you build armies and conquer the map. WIth each country to conquer you earn anything from experience, more troops, and in-game upgrades to your health, damage, and armor. This is kinda tricky to do well, so I will also create a guide to help people not waste all their credits, because if you waste a lot of credits, it takes forever to get them back and by then you're ready to move on with you life.
There is a multiplayer mode which has several different types of modes you can play. I am not sure what kind of community this game will have with so many great multiplayers already out but there is a chance you might enjoy it, although the developers even admit that the multiplayer was not their main focus of the game, which sent a red flag to me after playing the single player.
Overall I think this game had its moments and I did actually enjoy playing it, it will give you about 8-10 hours of gameplay for each race. I am now pretty excited to see the movie and am glad they made this game its own separate storyline. I'm going to give this game a rent it rating mostly because I don't see this game appealing to the masses as much as some other recent releases. But if these are your types of games I highly suggest trying it out for yourself.
This is SniperWolfHI and thank you for watching.
it should have been more like a mix of RPG and Free Roaming.
also more working on multiplayer + more different enemies.
