Rooney Mara Lands Coveted Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Role

It's one of the most sought-after movie roles in Hollywood right now. But landing the coveted role is a relatively unknown actress. Sony Pictures Entertainment has officially confirmed that actress Rooney Mara will star as the lead female in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. The 25-year-old beat out A-list actresses for the part, including Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson, Ellen Page and Carey Mulligan.

Mara will star alongside Daniel Craig and Robin Wright. The novel-turned-film is a cult favorite that is also stirring Oscar buzz. This will be the American version of the popular Swedish film. Rooney Mara is set to take on the role of Lisbeth Salander, a troubled computer hacker who tries to solve a murder mystery.

You may have seen Mara in the 2010 reboot of A Nightmare on Elm Street or on TV in bit parts on shows like ER and Law and Order: SVU. You can catch Mara in the upcoming flick The Social Network, which is also directed by The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo director David Fincher. Shooting for the film will begin in Sweden this September. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo has a planned release date of December 21, 2011.

For everyone getting butthurt about this movie, first of all David Fincher is at the helm. Fincher is a pretty good director, with titles like Zodiac, Fight Club, Social Network, and Benjamin Button. Second, both films are based off a book. Most praise should be reserved for the book, both films are supported on its shoulders. Third, all of the comments reek with "I was into it before it was popular" self-boasting.

Well i'm an american and i'm a huge fan of foreign films but i am going to see this film as well. It's not a competition and it's not like all american remakes are garbage look ate Let Me In and the Departed those were remakes and they are great.

They can't be bothered to read subtitles so they remake an amazing film. Noomi is the only Salander!
