As high quality sample libraries are becoming less expensive and readily available to the average user, more and more aspiring composers have turned to these libraries for their own use.

Sadly, while the quality of the libraries have gone up, that doesn't necessarily mean the midi realizations will sound more "real".

Here are eight things I do regularly to achieve more "realistic" sounds from my libraries.

I am primarily an East West user. I love the EW products, however, contrary to popular belief, they don't always sound spectacular "out of the box". It takes careful sequencing and mixing to use them to their full potential.

Enjoy. Check my channel for more stuff by me!

PS: I threw the demo at the beginning together really quickly simply to illustrate the tips mentioned in the tutorial.

  • great video. would you ever be interested in doing a video series on emulating specific instruments. or playing styles. such as emulating vibrato / tremolo on a flute, tips for articulation or tips for specific playing styles like funk guitar. i ask because i am a hip hop producer and i wish to add a lot more realism to the melodies in my arrangements. and its hard to find specific information on this

  • @PhaseDynamic Thanks for watching. As for certain articulations on instruments, like tremolo or vibrato, you would need specific samples (although I use the pitch bend for some "vibrato"). Or if you refer to when to use these sounds, then I'll say it's really up the individual. Does this make sense? Does it help at all?

  • Panning is your best friend

  • @JonathanAschalew Yes indeed it is. But what makes EastWest fun is they already prerecord a lot of that with their orchestra.

  • @OnTheWayByTruth4Life PDFtoMusic Pro

    first result in google.

Open a PDF file, it plays it in MIDI. If you pay, you can export to MIDI.

  • @averyaccordion what program?

  • thanks for this video! using EastWest is really a great experience but then at some point you get this feeling that something is missing.. now I realized that this is the key to that gap.. Thanks!

  • I got some software for free... it will read and decode sheet music (score) into MIDI,a nd will sing the voice (in a siri sounding voice)

Very good advices, I agree with all. MIDI has a lot of capabilities to sound realistic and most of the music out there is plain midi music.

  • @JonathanAschalew I would love to listen your music.

  • Great video!!! Very descriptive and straight to the points. Thanks, you obviously put some work and time into making this. If only every tutorial video was this good! haha

  • Is east west stuff WIVI based? Also when you say affordable, how much are we talking?

  • Very good video , you should do one as well if possible on how to record analog instruments into your DAW using proper converters, your explanation and in depth knowledge is a blessing.
