By the way, did you know that Saramago didn't want his Novell to be adapted into a movie? The reason? Because the emotions that all characters feel in the movie just can be imagined when you're reading...I agree.

Ruffalo is obviously the eye doctor, not the first man. The eye doctor went blind doing research after his wife was in bed and tells her the next morining. He says in the trailer "I must have been infected by the patient I saw yesterday" - just like the book.
