Boroujerdi, who is a Iranian Muslim cleric, and many of his followers were arrested in Tehran on October, 2006, following a clash between police and hundreds of his followers. He was accused of misinterpreting Islam.
Boroujerdi advocates the separation of religion and government and freedom of speech. Thus, he supports the separation of government from the dominance of Islam.
According to Boroujerdis associates, he was initially sentenced to death, but upon appeals his sentence was reduced to 11 years in prison.
