The West Somerset Railway's Mixed Traction Weekend of June 2011 saw a ceremonial theme to the event, 2011 marks the 25th Anniversary of the introduction of the Class 59 diesel locomotive.

Sponsoring the event with Mendip Rail, Foster Yeoman, Hanson, Aggregate Industries and DB Schenker who kindly sent over four Class 59s to star at the gala.

This was to be a rare glimpse to come up close and personal to a diesel you really only see on the mainline every so often. And even rarer to see a 59 run on a preserved railway! So it was worth getting something unique and also because of my fondness on American-designed locomotives

The four Class 59s featured in this film are:

59001 'Yeoman Endeavour' in Aggegates Industries livery
59002 'Alan J Day' in revised Foster Yeoman livery
59103 'Village of Mells' in Hansons livery
59206 'John Yeoman - Rail Pioneer' in DB Schenker livery

Because the 59s are only equipped with air brakes the WSR selected some of their coaching stocks that were air brake-equipped so that the 59s could haul them.
