Demostration of ATtiny2313 Geiger Counter

The radioactive sources used in the video are Americium buttons from some smoke detectors, radium watch hands and a pitchblende rock.

du e flink til og snakke engelsk. kor har du lært so bra engelsk? fantastisk projekt, eg har tenkt til og bygge en sann en en gang. tenkte å bestille geiger mueller rør på elfa. men eg har et par valg. kunne du ha anbefale eit bra rør til meg? eg kjeme nokk til og måle mest alfa og beta. men også lit gamma og røntgen. og eg har ikkje rs232 port på pcen min. går det ann å bruke sånn usb adapter til rs232? takker for svar.

@macvegard Takk. :-) Engelsken lærte jeg i Canada, jeg kommer opprinnelig derfra. Som overføring fra micro til PC funker en UART til USB adapter helt fint. Søk på FT232R, på ebay. Der finner du ferdiglagde moduler som det er bare å koble rett inn i prosjektet. Geiger rør bør du kjøpe på ebay også. Prisene hos Elfa er langt høyere enn dem du finner ellers. Skal du måle alfa stråling trenger du en med mica vindu, de fleste geigerrør har ikke det. Søk på "pancake Geiger", så finner du typen.

I know that the Americium pellets are only emmiters of Alpha radiation, but can you tell me why your touching it if its radioactive? Arnt you afraid of cancer or cell damage?

@FACP07 The alpha radiation is stopped by the plastic bag, and what little that does escape would be stopped by the outer layer of my skin. Alpha emitters are generally only dangerous if ingested, since they are then able to ionize living tissue. The reason the counter can detect the americium is because it also emits some low energy gamma radiation, all the way down in the x-ray spectrum. Cancer or tissue death would take a very long time to develop at such a low dose rate.

Love the setup! I have a few suggestions: 1). measure time (directly in attiny or use a dedicated chip like DS1307), this way you will be able to compute CPM 2).compute uSv/h using CPM*4/600 3).For the tubes HV, drive a transistor directly from the attiny, using PWM.
