My Brother Gabe Graduating Parris Island S.C USMC Boot Camp 2/29/2008
3rd Btl. Kilo Co. Pltn. 3022. It was one of the hardest things he has ever done in his life but said it was the most rewarding. I hope this video helps other families that are awaiting their son or daughter to graduate Parris Island as well and to bring home their new Marine. The transformation is something that is worth the long wait!

Gabes Graduation-

I didnt get much sleep the night before, the long flights and lay overs seemed to not matter, nor did the unwelcoming hotel room. everything that would normally drive me up the wall subsided to my anxiety and longing to see my brother. we woke up 5 hrs latter and headed to Parris Island arriving on base at 6:45am we saw the crowd surrounding the parade deck where the Motivational Run was starting(AKA the Moto Run: A opportunity to see your new Marine participate in the last run with their platoon. You watch them from the sidelines like a parade) The pressure was to tight in my chest I could hardly breath, we got as close as we could and tried to pick out Gabe. As the Parade started it all felt in slow motion... I was frantically looking for my brother and then I saw him, ear to ear grin on his face taking long strides. I was so proud. He looked so great! We didnt actually get to see them until 3 hrs later for family day. when we finally got to see gabe it was the strangest, most comfortable and most proud moments of my life. I looked up at my brother who now seemed, taller, calmer, more focused and confident. Before going to Parris Island I had though of so many things I wanted to say to my brother once reunited but at that single moment I didn't have a word to say. I was at a loss. In that moment not much need to be said I guess, enough was in our eyes.

3 Months before this moment I was a sister who was furious and un-understaning to why my brother joined the Marines. I could not grasp the idea of my brother possibly going to war, WHY WOULD HE WANT TO DO THIS, Why would he do this to us, me??.I was being selfish

Yes he was lost, he had no direction. Well he did have a direction and it was down the wrong path, a dangerous path. So I used that to justify his decision. He is making a 180 degree change. Maybe that's why it was so hard for me to adjust because this was the exact opposite of everything Gabe was.

At the moment I was reunited with my brother on Parris Island my views changed. I looked at those young men and women in awe. I was proud of all of them. They are all our Heroes. Not that I wasn't proud before. I come from a military family. I just didn't want my brother joining during such a dangerous time. I understand not everyone may agree with the war and the way our country is run BUT we all should respect the men and women who defend this country. They are selfless individuals who are sacrificing more that most people would. More then you or I would! We should all appreciate them regardless of our personal political views. These men and women might be naïve in your eyes but they are heroes in mine.

Conclusion: I see how proud my brother is, something I never saw in his eyes before. Its in his walk, his talk and in his pure being. He is happy, he found himself.

He said to me when he returned home " Cass I know you think or other people this we are stupid for joining during war but I consider this country my brothers and sisters and if they are fighting for this country then I feel like I should be beside them, I always wanted to do this. If I go to war or not It won't matter b/c I am serving how ever this country needs me to serve. Just remember that is why I joined and I am happy I am doing this" This was the best thing for him to do, I am convinced.

  • And to all of the ignorant people posting rude comments I am saying YOU ARE WELLCOMED from our military because w/o them fighting for this country / giving you the right to have freedom of speech this would not be possible.Other countries you may be throw in jail or killed for speaking your mind. So you are welcomed and you must be filled with so much hate, i am sorry for that. All please ignore all post of such nature from these individuals and do no give in to a confrontation with them. peace.

  • Thank you all for your continued support on this video /my brother & our military.Gabe has served his time w/ the Marines & has been home for some time. Hes currently giving time @ a Catholic Mission far from home. This time he is not only helping others but is helping himself while trying to grow spiritually & find inner peace .As w/ most Vets the transition back to civilian life can be challenging & scary & gabe did face such hurtles but is now doing great. We are so proud of our Marine.Oorah!
