Random Question: International Discipline Practices?
According to Wikipedia.org on the topic of Domestic Corporal Punishment:
"Domestic corporal punishment has now (2010) been outlawed in 29 countries around the world, beginning with Sweden in 1979. In Europe, 22 countries have banned the practice... In Africa, the Middle East, and in most parts of Eastern Asia (including China, Taiwan, Japan, and Korea), corporal punishment of one's own children is lawful. In Singapore and Hong Kong, punishing one's own child with corporal punishment is legal but not particularly encouraged. Culturally, many people in the region believe a certain amount of corporal punishment for their own children is appropriate and necessary, and thus such practice is accepted by society as a whole."
I don't know much of how the rest of the world works, but here in the U.S. it is legal to spank as long as you don't leave a lasting or visible bruise. In 20/50 states, it is still legal to receive corporal punishment in school (paddling). I've never personally heard anyone that was paddled in school or went to a school where it was allowed, so I'm not sure how common it is. As parental discipline, I've know it is common for most children in the U.S. to be spanked. It usually goes until the child is between 8-12 years of age. I've also known people to be well into their teen years and still be spanked.
For me personally, I grew up in a physically abusive home. Fortunately, I was taken out of that home before I received any abuse. I do understand the bad side of corporal punishment. After my adoption, my new family did spank me till I was about 7. I don't remember a lot about it, except that I hated it. I know people my age that are spoiled and disrespectful. They typically never had any type of punishments growing up. I can't say that that physical punishments completely work, but in American culture (especially in the major city areas) spanking is common and not looked down on.
Anyway, the real question that I'm trying to ask is what spanking, as means of physical punishment, is thought of around the world. What are typical punishments in countries that made spanking illegal or looked down on? Do they still practice it, even if it's illegal? How has it effected teens and young adult's behaviors' (more or less violent/disrespectful)? Are punishments in Asian and Middle Eastern countries as severe as they are shown in the media? Any other thoughts or comments on the subject are greatly appreciated! (If you are from a different country, stating which may clarify your response.)

I live in the US. I also wonder about what you Said. I'm almost 20 now but I lived with my grand parents and they're very much old fashioned. I was NEVER grounded. Personally, I think I'm glad I was spanked instead because then it's over and you still have the things you love lol...I went to a private school and paddling was allowed if the parents permitted. I was one time. But at home it was never more than a hand. :)

I live in the US. I was spanked until I was about ten or eleven. Always hard slaps with the hand, or belt from my mom or dad, and once with the paddle. I believe in spanking, I think it helps. My schools have all been paddling schools, and I even got paddled once, though I didn't deserve it. That's one of the reasons I put wrongful spankings in my stories, because I know what it feels like.

paddling was also done in my school when growing up, it was a form of punishment that could be administered at school by the principal but only if permitted by the parents, i think alot of corpral punishment has been banned because some people toe the line between punishing out of love to correct the behavior and punishing out of anger...there is a definite difference

I believe in spanking, I was raised very spare the rod spoil the child method. spanked until about 8-9 years range and after that grounding was more of an effective form of punishment, sometimes banning a child from everything they love is just the ticket LOL...I did however get the belt for situations that called for something other than grounding, obviously it wasnt something I enjoyed but DEFINITELY a punishment that is effective when done to correct behavior and not done out of anger
