Bobby The Dog

Reading a story aboout a six year old boy contemplating the death of his dog and its purpose, I was inspired to write this song about my first dog, Bobby.

When I was a little boy, running through the fields,
a bb gun in my hand and Bobby at my heels.
Splashing through the puddles, jumping over logs,
Bobby'd fetch whatever I threw, I sure liked that dog.
Bobby the collie sure was smart, he could open our back door,
herd the cows, feed himself, he liked to slide across the floor.

Sneaking through the woods, he's pointing out to me,
Bobby yeah I see that grouse sitting in that tree.
And when he'd see a rabbit run, into a briar patch,
He'd run around to the other side and stop him in his tracks.
Bobby the collie sure was smart, he could open our back door,
Hide and seek, rollover and speak, he liked to slide across the floor.

But dogs don't live as long as we do, they don't need our time to learn to love.

He always growled at the bad guys, but he never bit a sole,
and he never barked at nothing, he'd rather dig a hole.
He was always there a smiling, when I got off the bus,
to brighten up a dreary day, a friend that I could trust.
His head asleep upon my lap, or out the window on a drive,
He liked to race and chase, lick my face, I wish he was still alive.

But dogs don't live as long as we do, they don't need our time to learn to love,
