not true. just for the instalation you have to shut down your firewall and antivirus after the instalation just turn it back on

I have heard that magic jack cuts out your firewall and antivirus which make you completely vulerable to everything, is this true.

you can only call US and CANADA for free, other countries you need to buy credit, if you google magicjack go to their website, they have the international rates on there.
