My ignition lock cylinder seized the other night in the Home Depot parking lot. Since the steering wheel has an airbag i almost took the car to a garage so i can have the lock cylinder replaced because i was scared of taking the column apart. I later decided to replace the lock cylinder myself. The job turned out not to be so bad. You just gotta take a little caution, and make sure the system is disarmed before working on the steering column. I learned a few things, and also saved some cash even though i had to buy the tools for the job.

  • When removing clockspring, tilt wheel down.

PULL CLOCKSPRING STRAIGHT OUT AND OVER POST,,(DO NOT MESS WITH IT) IT HAS A LOCKING ARM ON BOTTOM THAT WILL KEEP IT IN THE SPOT IT WAS WHEN REMOVED. if your wheel were turned ,when you recentered spring? oops

  • I reset the clock spring, and the airbag has not deployed yet in over a year.

  • thanx man. got some confidence now.. what a coincidence, you mentioned your first car was a 77 chevy impala. and that was your first cylinder you've replaced. well i have the same car 77 impala coupe, and thats the reason i'm watchin this vid. my sis lost my keys so i gotta get a new ignition key and door lock. either do it myself or pay a locksmith $150. i decided to pay the appx $20-25 for the new ignition and for the locksmith to make me a key for the doors. thanx

  • Most older GM steering column's up until 1995 were very similar. The only change on the newer models was the wiper switch on the signal arm. The job sounds complicated at first, but once you get skilled at it the job is easy as pie. The biggest pain is removing the snap ring on the lock plate, but you have to have a lock plate remover to compress the lock plate down. If you rebend the snap ring, and think its distorted dont worry about it when reinstallating. Good luck!

  • If you have the small block V8 in that Chevy i would upgrade the timing chain because the cam gears had teflon teeth which wear down in a short time.

  • ever hear of wd 40?

  • I tried that, but never worked.

  • me and my mom had a 1994 buick century and it kept getting stolen, all they did was pop the passanger door lock out and broke the steering column shaft and started it with a screwdriver.... was stolen twice and that was my xmas present last year. a car thats totaled by a black pussy. and you people wonder why people are racist.

  • i have a 1984 bronco 2 and i cant get the ignition cylinder out even with key in the ignition i knew how take it out but it did not come out

  • Hey, I'm about to do almost the same job on my 94 Century. I'm changing out the turn signal switch. Can you tell me more about the bolts that you have to unscrew on the back of the steering wheel? Do you know what size hex they are?

  • also put tape on clockspring so it wont unwind.

  • dont remove the key buzzer- just take a screwdriver and and hit with hammer to break off white tab that's in the way of the screw
