'America' was three quarters of the way written when Natalie performed it live for Sir Paul McCartney, with whom she received a one to one songwriting masterclass when she was still at college. Sir Paul wrote the chords to the bridge section, which Natalie then furnished with lyrics and melody. Thus the song was finished.
