Henry Geehl (1881-1961) was - despite the title of this piece - English. He taught at Trinity College of Music from 1919, and composed concertos, a symphony as well as lighter pieces. He was also well-known as an arranger (for example, he made a solo piano arrangement of Franck's 'Variations symphoniques'. He also wrote some of the music for the 1946 Paganini biopic 'The Magic Bow', starring Stewart Granger. His popular song 'For You Alone' was the only English-language item recorded by Caruso. The piece on this video is a very highly finished piece of light music. The use of a French title for a work of this kind published in London in 1922, seems anachronistic, but presumably refers to the French origins of the subject matter. The legend of Pierrot and Pierrette originated in a painting by Watteau, and taken up by the Italian Commedia dell'Arte. Pierrette's affections for the fun-loving clown Pierrot run hot and cold, hence the coquettishness of the music.

Thanks for your comment. I would scan it but it is still way in copyright here in the EU. Most music of this kind I find by searching charity and other second-hand shops, so maybe you can do the same where you live.

Thanks - I think this piece is definitely worth resurrecting, although I remember finding it difficult to learn when I first bought it.
