When I was young, I always thought the green balls were the adults in the family, and when the little red ball made it over the mountain, they were proud.

OR, maybe because the little ball is too small for the big hill, and it's saying don't bite off more than you can chew.
For some reason, this reminds me of those Monty Python animations. XP
