When the army, led by General Franco, seized control of Spain in 1936 from the democratically elected socialist government, my dad and his pal volunteered as snipers for the International Brigade to help fight for freedom for the Spanish against Franco and Hitler and sold their farm in Canada. They lost, of course, a fight that would have prevented WW2 if America and Britain hadn't stood by doing nothing, more frightened of socialism than fascism. The hook comes from the fact that most of the young men signed on with literally Mickey Mouse names. My dad's pal died, he survived.
