This song is in my opinion about how his life has never gotten better and even the love of his life had betrayed him. When the lyrics say " here we are, fighting and trying to hide the scars" I believe he means the scars that his life had put upon him. My lady and I truly love this song and As he says

"take a breath and softly say goodbye" I believe it means she's leaving him and he feels alone in the world, and he walks the road alone because there's no one to help him anymore

Does anyone know what the moral of this song actually is? It's a cracking song! One of my faves, alongside Firefly and Polyamorous, but I can't really figure out what this song's about.
