Additionally a half-hitch, by definition, is a turn...against a direction of pull. unless the tension is at 90 degrees to the tie off point there has to be a direction of pull and the hitch should counter it to prevent sliding towards the tension. Both half-hitches in a clove hitch should counter the direction of tension. With his long end coming from camera left he has demonstrated it backwards in both demos.
It helps to know the rational behind knots. The Clove hitch is intended to be used in the middle of the line with tension on both ends. It will not hold with tension on only one end, especially with slick synthetic cordage. If used as a tie-off near the end with tension on only one side it should be finished with another half hitch around the taut rope with the short end.

a knot I used all the time as a parachute rigger when I was in military was a bowline knot. --- may be a good one to consider.
