It's usually people other than those who raised the animal that get attacked. I'm not saying it's safe or smart to do of course. In Eddy's case, they did move him out of the house and with other animals when he grew older. Without their help, he might have died by his own father, and his mother may not have known how to care for him.
In Roy's case that was not a case of a natural killer. If Montecore wanted him dead he would be dead. It's speculated he was trying to drag him to safety.
