It's amazing what was possible on a C64 but the port of R-TYPE is far away from the awesome brilliant gameplay of the original.

Um... does the end music sound slightly similar to the music in Super Mario Bros 3 that plays when you beat a battleship?

OWNED!
Great gameplay there.
I dunno how many 10ps I musta pumped into the arcade version of this in the late 80s!
I remember getting the c64 version for like,my 12th birthday, but the thing never loaded. Apparantly, the multi-load on the cassette was a bit of a nightmare!
Despite that, with perseverence, the game looked and played great.
One of the best ever shoot em ups,if you ask me.
The music in this version of the game is certainly more upbeat than the arcade. It either makes me want to dance or headbang. Haha...

I bought this aswell and the multi-loader was a pain. The game itself was bug-riddled.
BUT I take my hat off to the programmers (who incidentally went on to form the company Factor 5) who converted it in just 7 weeks (and I know how hard it is to convert a game). I had the original versions of this by the original programmers and they had spent a year on it and basically got no where.
BTW. I think the C64 versions music is better than the arcade original.
