At the beginning, he'd rather keep his out of ammo fuel rod than a max ammo assault rifle ( I say max because unless you have infinite or there are level specifications, that's the highest you can get)

Also, you can get in one of those Wraiths (blue tanks) by boarding and punching instead of planting a grenade and then climbing off by holding X.
