I think what hooks people in is his worldliness and the amount of research he did. Eventually, you get a sense that for Crowley, it was more about the journey of discovery then attaining enlightenment. he did have many charlatan qualities, but I think his belief in magic was solid.

There's something about him that he had the right thing but interpreted it in the light of the Oscar Wilde set of the late 19th century. It's a bit disappointing that the program's focus is on his magic, his drug use and sex life and his personality. I was hoping they'd discuss his work outside of the OTO such as his poetry and his work with British intelligence.
