Tragedy struck the A40 adjacent to RAF Northolt on the 28/09/04, when an articulated HGV carrying scrap metal overturned onto the central barrier, tragically resulting in the death of the driver. The road was closed for most of the day.

How is it possible for something this size and weight to be physically lifted off the ground and flung on its side.It is beyond belief and does not make sense.

A main contributing factor on this accident (in addition to bad driving) was the poor design of the barriers which are designed for side impacts. This truck turned over & fell onto the barrier from above, snapping off the horizontal rail and bending the upright columns to 45 degrees. It was these unprotected 45 degree stakes (see video@ 3.24 seconds) now pointing towards the truck as it slid towards them, that tore into the truck cab causing many of the guy's injuries.
