The Saab JAS 39 Gripen (Griffin or "Gryphon") is a fighter aircraft manufactured by the Swedish aerospace company Saab. The aircraft is in service with the Swedish, Czech, Hungarian and the South African air forces, and has been ordered by the Royal Thai Air Force.
The Gripen was one of the aircraft that the IAF sent the Request for Information. The Gripen participated at Aero India 2007, where one JAS 39C (single seater) and two JAS 39D (two-seater) variants were brought. Gripen International is offering the Gripen IN, a version of the Gripen NG (Next Generation) for India's competition. The Gripen NG has increased fuel capacity, more powerful powerplant, higher payload, upgraded avionics and other improvements.

  • @chex29 Can't say dude. American jets are sanction prone and politically binding. Rafale and Typhoon are just too expensive not in buying but also operational costs. That leave MiG-35 which is a NO-NO since getting it will make IAF the Russian air force Number 2 on earth--all eggs in 1 basket.

So considering this angle, Gripen NG/IN miiiiigggghhhht win.

  • The gripen is a good aircraft but the decision for India is a political one as well, with competition from the US, Europe(Typhoon), and Russia. Sweden has much less to offer in terms of defence cooperation and alliance. being European id prefer them to order typhoon, but its overpriced and not meeting the IAFs requirements. so the F18 with all its upgrades is the much better choice, and an all round better aircraft.

  • as an Indian, my choice is with Eurofighter Typhoon

  • Tejas Mark 2 will have all these and maybe even better features (due to its later entry and heavy modifications) which will make Gripen simply redundant in IAF. If Tejas was a medium fighter programme, Gripens could have been considered. Just a co-incidence that we chose similar fighter type for our first jet.

Although word has it that for AMCA mediuim stealth jet, India is in talks with SAAB. So we might even see Swedish participation in a 5G project with us on a minor scale

  • @DualofChaos India has already dropped the idea to get JAS 39, they lack quite a lot than the requirements of the IAF.

  • I hope the Gripen does NOT sell to India. It would be fine if sold to Brazil or something like that, but India? No thanks.

  • Gripen is a good fighter but what goes against it is the fact that the finished LCA will occupy this niche whether you call it last chance aircraft or the little cute angel.

  • If gripen switches to ej2000 engine, they have better chance of winning mmrca.i cannot comment on fx as im not brazilian.

  • rightly said ,gripen needs to to be offered with the EJ2000 engine of the eurofighter,SAAB should understand the need of non yank fighter
