I was sat in my hotel room last night, watching the #p4a progress, and I was struck by the need to vlog. It's not very p4a related, and I will probably making a more detailed account of the reality-bending awesome that was the last two days. Until then, DFTBA!

  • We're all pretenders and that is what real humans do.

  • Happy Birthday

  • Happy Birthday m'dear!

Very good question. I guess it's the novelty of it all, like someone else said earlier its the frequency in which you visit these places that may bring upon such feelings. Just to add a different perspective on things I will say this. It doesn't really matter, because the hotel is still draining you of your money no matter where you stand!

  • i know i pretend to be "the real people" but im in no way one of them lmao, even though when i do go to hotels, i go to big fancy ones, but as a pretender hehe its more fun i think, its complicated stuff isnt it xo

  • Happy birthday Becca. I would say that we are the real people. The idea of the "real" people is a social and mental construct that exist in the mind of the few. You are by definition the type of person that goes to nice hotels on occasions such as this because here you are vlogging about it. Why you are there is more of an interesting question for me.

  • Oh wow. That's a fun thought. I don't know how to answer that.

  • I've never considered myself a 'pretender'. I've always been someone who dresses/acts however he wants, no matter what, because that's something I just am like.

I think that pretending, is another word for acting. Acting the part. If you act the part, you become the part.

So I dunno my answer. I just wanted to chime in.

  • Thanks so much for the hard work you did on my video. You really helped me to be one of the most commented in the uk over the weekend. Thank you so much.

  • Huh, that's really thought-provoking.

I feel out of place in really cheap places and really posh places- in non-posh places it's like "What if they find out I'm rich and then hate me for a being a pretender" and in posh places it's like "I fit in here way too easily/well, i must be one of those horrible rich people."

But I find that when i pretend , I end up becoming real- If I pretend to feel comfortable in a backpackers hostel then I'll become comfortable, and ditto for posh hotels.

  • First, Happy Birthday! Have a great weekend!

Second, with regard to your question: whenever I have been in posh hotels in London (which is not that often), I feel like a 'pretender'. Everyone else looks so 'at home' and I feel 'out of place'. I would guess that the extent to which a person feels 'real' or 'pretend' in that environment depends upon the frequency with which they visit that type of hotel and whether they are accustomed to being in that environment - which some people are!
