and asking such an opinionated question was dumb on my part
are the moral choices really consequential?
like do you find out the actual effects in time and do they cause you to regret and rethink your actions?

Yes, throughout the game you were given quite a lot of decisions to make, all of which have their relative outcomes, some are just a short story, a few changes and affect the sub-plot.
