I got Sonic 1 and 2 rather soon after Sonic & Knuckles, but Sonic 3 was never part of my childhood. It really started the modern, cool feeling Sonic & Knuckles has though.

I remember the item locations in the ground with the sign were fixed in Sonic & Knuckles. I noticed on Xbox Live some people have maxed out their score, which means bouncing that sign for stupidly long. x)

Easy to get disoriented in those special stages too.. especially as the speed limit is MUCH higher than in the sequel.

Been a while since you made this, but just in case you haven't found out: the sound effect that sounds like when you get hit and lose rings you're saying "what the hell was that" to is activated when you get 100 rings in any special stage. It's really random. x)

Also, when you get Perfect, you always get a Continue and 50k score. What you get an extra life for is surpassing each instance of 100k score.

Sonic & Knuckles was the first game I got as a kid.. that's my equivalent of your Sonic 3 =>
