This is what I've been told by every female politician that I've interviewed. Apparently first there are many high costs incurred when trying to become a candidate within a riding association! Then once you are the candidate, the more money you raise for your own campaign likely the more successful you will be (best advertising, flyers, campaign management, office rental, etc).

It is more difficult for women to ask for money and they are not as connected to business donors.
