The following protest was held on 28/02/2008, in Glen Waverley, outside Maxine Moran's office. The speaker was AEU Victoria, Branch Secretary Brian Henderson.
The AEU had some questions for Premier John Brumby and Education Minister Bronwyn Pike that remain unanswered.
"Perhaps you could explain to the Victorian public why if a teacher was employed in Victoria today and a teacher was employed in New South Wales, the teacher in New South Wales over the next twelve years of their working life will be paid $114,520 more than their Victorian counterpart for doing essentially the same job."
"You can also explain why Primary and Secondary teachers in New South Wales work less hours than their Victorian counterparts and work the same number of days but are paid $10,000 more."
The current offer of a 3.25% pay increase to Victorian teachers is an insult.
"New South Wales teachers are already 15% ahead and they are claiming a further 5% for each of the next two years. In this context, our claim represents no more than the catch-up that is necessary to enable Victorian schools to attract and retain teachers in a job market of increasing scarcity."
In the decade to 2007, the number of teachers in government schools grew by just 14%, while the non-government school teacher population increased by 33.1%.
"Teachers and Principals are sick of subsidizing the public education system because your Government wants to run it on the cheap. This has again been confirmed by the most recent productivity commission report that shows Victoria continues to be the lowest funding state or territory when it comes to education. So, shame on you Mr. Brumby and shame on you Maxine Moran, who is also a member of the Brumby cabinet."
Almost 1 in 5 Victorian teachers are currently on short-term contracts and close to 80% of first-year teachers commence on one.
"We make no apologies to try to improve the retirement incomes of people who you refuse to give job security to by employing them on short-term contracts and the level of contract employment is now at the same level as it was under the Kennett Government. It is a disgrace"
Victorian teachers have been left with no option but to continue industrial action.
"We are getting E-mails and letters from members from right across Victoria saying, "Keep up the fight, don't back down," teachers are angry and they are angry at the Brumby government and the Brumby government will pay unless they heed the call of teachers to come back to the negotiating table and to negotiate a fair and just agreement, thank you all for coming today."
What do we want? A fair deal - When do we want it? Now
Teacher shortage not okay, 3.25 not the way

Hey, hey, ho, ho, contract teaching's got to go.
