At approximately 1:00 a.m. on October 19, 2013, Parkland County Emergency Communications Centre (ECC) received multiple 911 calls regarding the derailment of a westbound CN train along Highway 16 and Range Road 61 near the community of Gainford, a hamlet located about 40 minutes west of Edmonton in Parkland County. Thirteen cars derailed, nine of which contained liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and four contained petroleum crude oil. When the derailment occurred, four of the cars containing LPG were compromised, causing a massive explosion and fire, including grassfires on both sides of Highway 16. With the rising threat of further explosions, Parkland County fire crews immediately began evacuating residents within a 1 mile radius of the incident site. What transpired over the next 82 hours before the 136 residents returned home outlines Parkland County's ability to cope with the emergency.
