The flight crew of this B-52 was attempting to execute a low speed, low altitude, 90 degree bank in a B-52 during a rehearsal for the 1994 Fairchild AFB air show. Unfortunately the maneuver exceeded the aircraft's capabilities and published limitations, with predictable results.

  • @somnus71 No. He was banking to much at too low speed, yes. But as he did so, his wingtips would have stalled leaving him with no aileron control. Hence the aircraft continues to creep up towards a 90 degree bank angle, and the pilot is left unable to correct the motion. The aircraft falls to the ground as a rock, as no vertical lift component exist anymore. No pilot does a 90 degree bank at low speed. This one pushed the limit too far, and ended up 90 degrees unwillingly.

  • @Kissinpoika It was stunt flying by a maniac pilot. Death wish.

  • That explosion was the living fuckeries, man! That's a BIG plane to come down on an airfield in that way. It's a shame, I don't think the crew should have considered buggering around doing stunts with an aeroplane like that.

  • RIP crew

  • Check out Wikipedia page 1994_Fairchild_Air_Force_Base_B-52_crash

  • @eaterofclams The B-52H does have spoilerons, yes. Memory lapse. The principle for loss of lift is the same though. B-52 A-F have ailerons.

  • @curtiiis80

NOTAM to the internet experten: the B-52 does not have ailerons. Really.

    Please stop spreading BS.

    Thank You.
