An early National Train Day video, and to celebrate my first Anniversary on Youtube. Part of the origional Transcontinental Railroad, the Niles Canyon Railway is a tourist railroad in the San Francisco Bay Area, operating between Fremont and Pleasanton.
Origionaly the goal of the Trainscontinental Railroad was to connect the east and west coasts by rail with the Central Pacific from the west and The Union Pacific from the east.
With the Central Pacific line ending in Sacramento, the origional Western Pacific built a railroad from San Jose to Sacramento to connect with the transcontinenal line, but financial problems forced the Western Pacific to go bankrupt, and the line was acquired by the Central Pacific.
Over the years the route through the canyon was a major freight and passenger line until the faster Cal-P line along San Pablo bay was purchased and the Niles Canyon line became a secondary line.
As the years went by the Central Pacific was bought out by the Southern Pacific, Niles Canyon continued as a secondary line until passenger service ended in the1940's.
In 1984 SP officialy suspended Niles Canyon operations and gave the right of way to Alameda County and the rails were pulled up. The abandondment of the NCRY was short lived as the Pacific Locomotive Association begain to rebuild the line starting in 1987. Since then the railroad has expanded from Sunol to Niles, and there our plans to rebuild the line to Pleasanton.
The railroad has alot to offer when it comes to history, from old downtown Niles to Beautiful steam locomotives, the Niles Canyon Railway certanly is one of California's most famous tourist railroads.
Here is a music video I made to promote the NCRY, all music is from Pirates of the Caribbean.
Enjoy the vid, and visit www.ncry.org.

At 4:22, does the lettering on the coach mean "$19.75 Lunch served all day" or is it the origional (or current) number and an advertisement?

That car is Southern Pacific #1975, AKA the All Day Lunch or ADL. It was origionally used on the suntan specials from Oakland to Santa Cruz. It is currently owned by the Pacific Locomotive Association for use on the Niles Canyon Railway.
P.S. Don't you think $19.75 for lunch is alittle rediculous?

The $19.75 lunch was a little joke I thought was funny. Now that I think about it, it does sound redicoulas in two ways.

Yup. By the way, yes, the #1975 is the car's origionall number and the All Day Lunch is just a nickname for it. Just like how Roaring Camp shay #1's nickname is Dixiana.

This is a really cool place, I wish I could visit from London England! We all need to work together on saving our History and Heritage, cos when it's gone it's gone!
So glad someone is saving something on the other side of the world too!
