A deadly train accident has left dozens of people dead in Indonesia's Java Province over the weekend. It may have been caused by operator error.
Up to 36 people have died and dozens are injured after two trains collided in Indonesia's central Java province early Saturday morning.
Local television showed overturned and badly mangled carriages.
Rescue and transport ministry officials put the death toll at around 23 with many more injured, while local news agency Antara said 36 people were killed in the crash.
Locals surrounded the Petarukan railway station in Pemalang to help the rescue team and police.
[Kurhadi, Local Resident]:
"The train [economy class] was hit from the rear when stopped and the sound of the impact was very loud. The accident happened about three o'clock in the morning and people who lived close to the railway station immediately came to help."
The bodies of the dead were being placed at a local hospital awaiting identification, while the wards were filled with injured survivors.
[Santi, Crash Survivor]:
"I heard a loud voice, then the carriage was lifted and the lights went out. I was thrown around and finally was trapped in the carriage."
Officials said initial reports indicated that one of the trains had not been given permission to go ahead when it hit the other train, but an investigation into the cause of the collision is still underway.
I don't see why the fuck why they have to report everytime some person dies or gets injured.
