Google is half the problem here. Their results (especially image results) are full of sites with this malware, but they don't appear to be doing much about it. Bing blocks all the ones I've found. Google should have a "flag as malware" button for each search result and an algorithm for prioritizing, investigating and blocking flagged sites.
I Believe there was a scareware that basicly came up with a pop up that said "Erase your hard-drive?" followed by only two buttons that said OK. Regardless of what you picked, all your data would remain intact.
